Victorian Champions League Under 18 Boys - Southern Blue Tongues versus Western Wolves.
The Southern Blue Tongues will play the South East Cougars in the Victorian Champions League Under 18 Boys Grand Final at Epping Stadium, tomorrow night.
Last night’s second semi final saw the Blue Tongues defeat the Western Wolves 1-0 for the final spot in the Grand Final.
The Blue Tongues’ pressure got them over the line in a close and feisty match at DISC. They signalled their intentions early, and nearly scored after a goal mouth scramble in the opening minutes.
In contrast to the first semi final between the South East Cougars and North East Diamonds, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was perfect conditions for finals football.
Early on in the first half both side had plenty of scoring opportunities but weren’t able to capitalise.
Soon after, the Blue Tongues hit the lead, after Ashley Savanah went one-on-one with the Western Wolves’ goal keeper, Andrew Masutti, and was able to put it past him with ease.
After the Blue Tongues took the lead they dominated the play, putting continual pressure on the Wolves’ defence.
After absorbing the pressure in the later stages of the first half, the Wolves had the Southern Blue Tongues on the back foot, but the Blue Tongues were able to sustain any goal scoring pressure that was put on them.
After half time the Wolves’ showed glimpses of attacking flair, and their best chance to score came from Berkan Yurdakul when he beat two defenders and only had to knock it past the Blue Tongues’ keeper, but the ball went straight into the keepers hands.
Aside from the earlier goal, the Western Wolves’ keeper, Masutti, was having a fantastic match, saving many shots on goal, including a corner opportunity that was deflected in from point blank range.
The last few minutes were extremely tense as the Wolves tried to find an equaliser. It wasn’t to be, and the victory went to the Southern Blue Tongues.
