Scouts' last chance to check out VCL talent for State Squads

After keeping a watchful eye on the participants throughout the home and away series of the 2009-10 Victorian Champions League, talent scouts will be out in force to finalise their State Squads during the upcoming VCL Championship Series.

The Series format, which sees all teams from all Zones compete over two weekends and in four matches, was specially designed to allow all VCL participants maximum opportunity to impress in the final stages of State selection.

The introduction of summer football to the Football Federation Victoria calendar has been instrumental in creating the perfect environment for selectors to observe our football talent with a view to picking squads to commence training towards the 2010 National Championships.

State Coaches, in consultation with Head Zone Coaches, VCL Team Coaches and Football Federation Victoria coaching personnel, have been monitoring the progress of all Victorian Champions League players since the second season of Victorian summer competition commenced back in October 2009.  With 11 home and away games and plenty of ball-skill focussed training behind them, the 1,500 juniors vying for selection will be out to impress in these final four matches.

Football Federation Victoria’s Technical Director, Les Bee, has been assisting in the talent identification process throughout the season, and says coaches will have a tough time making their final selections.

“There is considerable talent in this year’s VCL.  I have been out and about visiting each of the Zones and seen some terrific football and some great players," Bee said.

"It will be really difficult to make some of the selections, but that’s always a nice problem to have.”

Participation in the 2009-10 Victorian Champions League is the only way young Victorians can be selected for the 2010 Victorian State Squads with match observation replacing previous ‘trials’ systems.

“Not only does the League provide us the opportunity to watch participants’ performance under match conditions, we can also watch over a longer period of 15 or so games,” Bee said.

Championship Series matches will kick off in Shepparton on January 30th and 31st and continue in Melbourne over the weekend of 6th and 7th February.
